Are you considering buying a futon for your bedroom or living room? Futons are a great buy and not only because they are cheap when compared to a full-length bed and mattress set. A futon is comfortable to sit on and can be made into a bed with a quality mattress. Furthermore, futons are easy to assemble, break down, and then reassemble, making them a very “portable” bed that’s easy to transport. Some futons can be used as beds or as couches depending on the folding mechanism.
Futons are flat mattresses that are often paired up with a frame that can be used as a casual settee or bed. Futons originated in Japan but have since transformed into modern versions that are utilized as space savers as well as decorative objects in living rooms, offices and bedrooms. Futons are popular in all age groups and accompany most decors.
Function
A futon is typically used for a place of rest and relaxation, but it can be found in a living room or family room as a casual piece of the furniture decor. Futons are widely used by college students and apartment dwellers due to their ability to quickly transform from a settee to a bed in minutes. This allows for space-saving options in small living spaces. The thickness of the futon is important in function as well as comfort. For futons that will be used daily for sleeping, a thick foam futon mattress is the best choice. Futons are are about the size of a large love seat in length and width and fold out to the size of a double bed when laid out flat.
Types
There are four main types of futon frames: wood, metal, wicker and upholstered. Wood futons are popular for those who want to implement their futon into a casual setting to be used as a guest bed in a small guest room or porch. Deep rich wood backings, legs and arms highlight the futon, accented with striking suede or velvet fabric. Metal futons are popular in college dorms and children 's rooms due to the black or metallic finish on the futon. Kids love futons; they can keep them in an upright position for studying and watching TV and then later unfold the futon for night time sleeping. Wicker futons are popular for those who enjoy a garden or natural feel to their decor. These are perfect for covered decks, sunrooms and screened porches. Upholstered futons are inexpensive furniture alternatives for those just starting out or sharing a living space with someone else. They give the room a warm, comforting feel. There are also futon chairs that are half the size of a standard futon and make a great companion to existing futon decor. The variety makes futons practical and functional at the same time.
Features
Futon mattresses have many different features and styles. The most important are that the outside of the mattress comes in a variety of textures and designs. Some of the most popular are suede, leather, chenille, woven fabric and cotton. Floral, checkered and cartoon designs also adorn futons, and many can be special ordered to one's specifications.
Futons can be filled with a variety of items. The most popular is poly foam, which provides support and comfort. Another popular filler is buckwheat. Buckwheat is used as an all-natural support element in the futon and also regulates body temperature. Some futon mattresses sport a pillow-back look that is great for teenager decor, as well as dorm students seeking stylish flair. Leather furniture is perfect for executive suites when the office needs a sleek and stylish look.
Effects
A futon provides a great way for children who share a room to conserve space in their living area. The futon folds into a couch for daytime play; then at night or when guests come over, the futon lays out flat to form a double bed. Double or queen-sized sheets work well on most futon mattresses. Futons also offer extra seating areas for guests by moving the futon into a party area or living room. Futons are lightweight and can be easily taken apart and moved to a different location. Futons are less expensive than most day beds, double-sized mattresses and pull-out couches. Futons and the frame can be sold separately, allowing for a larger variety of style options.
